Writing really is the greatest median of communication that exists. Some might disagree, but I have always thought that writing tends to bring out the true person inside yourself…you dont have to accept the social requirements of every day life and you can just pour your soul out into your work. I have loved to write since I was in elementary school…most of the things I wrote when I was young was the ramblings of a kid who was just entering puberty, and stories with little character development and nice endings, but not anymore
I am about 25000 words into my Nanawrimo novel (which my friend Cait tells me is far ahead of where most people are) and I couldnt help but notice how much more conscientious I have become about my story writing. I read whole paragraphs and I change them completely because I feel like there isnt enough description or there is too much dialogue ( or im correcting my own grammar mistakes) and before, I would not worry about any of that..I would just write. My storytelling has become much darker and my characters much more complex. I am kind of dreading when I have to write out the death of one of my major characters…after investing so much time into the story, you can grow kind of attached to them. One thing I am not good with in my writing and that I do not even attempt is sexuality. I have romance but no sexuality…I feel like some writers include things like sex scenes in novels in order to maybe appeal to a broader audience, but I wont even touch that…my stories are character & dialogue driven..I like to build the relationships between characters without using things like sex because it enables you to build a deeper character. I also like to write from different viewpoints, my nanowrimo piece has about 7 or 8 different viewpoint characters (a style i learned to enjoy from a set of novels by Harry Turtledove). It enables the reader to learn a bit more about the characters innermost thoughts and I think that is important…I always use third person though…always!
being a writer does not always mean that you have to show everyone your work..I have many things I have written that I choose not to share with people, but I also can enjoy sharing pieces with others as well (thus the journalist side of me)
Another thing that is off subject…take a breather and relax everybody! take time to spend it with your friends and take a load off!
Im happy to report that I have at last found a new car…a replacement for my beloved Elisa. It is a much older car, a 98 Honda Civic, but I quite like it so far. My best friend insists on the reliability of Hondas, and I got a good price for it (3400.00). I have decided to name her Penny, after the Beatles song and the character from the movie “Almost Famous” , Penny Lane…how cool is that! Buying a car is pretty intense…I got it from a used car lot that was right on River Rd (DC Motors). The place had a kind of side of the road feeling but I liked the salesman and I got a good deal with it I believe (sticker price was 3500 and I got it down to 3225 before DMV titling fees). I am fairly proud if it as it has a very nice stereo, cruise control and AC. I cant wait to really take it out in the road!!!
After a year of constant tv spots, debates, speeches and campaigning, the US Presidential Election is over, and not to the surprise of many Barack Obama was reelected for a second and final term. The election was one of the more contentious ones that I can remember, and even though it really was not close in the Electoral College vote (303-206 with Florida uncounted) it was very close in the popular vote with I believe only a few million votes separating Obama with the challenger, Governor Mitt Romney.
If you voted for President Obama then your probably ecstatic about the win but if you voted for Mitt, then your bitter and angry and some are even sad about i…and I think some of that is unwarranted.
From the reaction to the many Republican party supported that I have seen, many of them have reacted badly to Obama’s win. Some of them insist that Obama being reelected is going to be the end of the US as we know it, some of them want to move out of the country and some of them are actually hoping that someone will assassinate the president (im sure your reading this Secret Service but im just saying what i have seen, nothing more) and that is what is wrong with this country,
This great country is so divided along political lines that it is almost scary to reveal your political beliefs to others because some actually will react violently. Republican supporters that are angry about the loss insinuate that everyone who voted for Obama is “unamerican” and “uneducated idiots” (democrats have their own name calling too) As long as this kind of divide exists then we will never be “America the great” again… we might as well seperate into 2 countries…the republican half and the democratic half, then we can sit across the border between the two and give eachother the “death stare”
Mitt Romney ran a good campaign and it is clear that he loves this country a lot, as does President Obama…they just have different views on how to run it…and we should all be glad that they do because living in a country where there are no dissenting opinions would be terrifying… Also, Mitts concession speech was classy and well put together…pretty good for someone who said he only wrote a victory speech.
Republicans…it is NOT the end of the world now that Obama is reelected! He is not going to turn the USA into a Obama dictatorship or the Communist States of America. So you dont like him? Wait 4 years and vote for the next Republican nominee that will be running (or if your not a sheep, actually choose a candidate and not follow a party blindly) That is the beauty of this country…We can vote for whomever we like and nobody will try to kill you to make you choose somebody they like. (In Saddam Hussein Iraq you would be shot in the street if you didnt vote for Saddam)
Also a congratulations to Barack Obama. You ran a great campaign with an even better strategy that enabled you to keep your position as leader of the free world for another 4 years. May these next 4 years be years of great prosperity and happiness in this country
Thank you and long live the United States of America
Stay classy America
There is a song that seems to continually find its way to be playing in my music shuffle…Move Along by All American Rejects. Say what you might say but I actually quite like that song. I saw them perform it earlier this year at the Lane County Fair and thought it was still quite good. My post today is not going to be some praisefest for the band, but rather one of hope and positiveness.
The song seems to be talking about a person who has lost all hope but is continuing to move along in life with the hope that it will eventually get better and I think that is one of the most positive messages that a song can have. I have had a lot of shit happen with my life…divorced parents;social anxiety;continually moving around;my moms death and depression but yet here I am.
I have never been a person to let things get me down too much…well at least I try not to be. I always try to put things in perspective, as it could always be worse (and its hard to imagine worse things than some things). Like now…I found out that my beloved Elisa the Caliber was indeed totaled in the wreck I was in 2 weeks ago. I have been without a car for 2 weeks, having to rely on my friend to drive me back and forth to work, the accident was declared my fault and now im dealing with the repercussions of that, but I try to remain somewhat positive…I was not hurt, the woman who hit me was not hurt and my insurance is going to cover everything..so it could of been worse.
Sometimes, when your feeling depressed about something, you have to look at a broader picture..while I am sitting here, typing on my laptop in a nice, heated house with working electricity and clean water, the people all along the northeast that were in the path of Hurricane Sandy are not having an ideal week. I can complain about things like car damages if I want, but they would all have the right to shut me up.
Even in light of the devastation that the hurricane caused, there is hope…every day I hear stories about people who risked their lives to save others that were trapped and at deaths door during the hurricane, some of them still breathing and some of them not so lucky, and yet some of the people there are hoping for a better future…they just keep moving along
to sum it up…life is too short to get caught up in things, just count the fact that you are still alive and you will live to see another day because if people who watched a hurricane blow their house down or saw a flood of water wash their house away and are now living in red cross camps without power can still maintain a somewhat positive attitude and keep moving along…why cant we all?
